If you are a Housing Choice Voucher holder and have the desire to own a home of your own, MHA’s Housing Choice Voucher Homeownership Program may be right for you. The program is structured to provide residents with individualized support throughout the home buying process, from initial interest through post-purchase counseling.
Under the Homeownership program, upon becoming eligible, instead of using the family’s voucher subsidy to help with rent, participants use their Section 8 Voucher to purchase a home and pay monthly homeownership expenses.
Housing Choice Voucher program participants interested in the homeownership program are required to participate and successfully complete the Family Self-Sufficiency Program.
Additionally, to participate the families must:
- Meet specific income and employment requirements (the employment requirement does not apply to elderly and disabled families)
- Be a first-time homeowner as defined in the regulation
- Meet the eligibility requirements set by the MHA during the intake process, such as attending and completing the pre-assistance homeownership and housing counseling program
